Taste the Local Dishes of Kenya

If you’re looking for a real wildlife experience, you can never go wrong visiting Kenya. Kenya has been known for its vast wildlife preserves and scenic savannahs. It is located in East Africa and has 5 neighboring countries namely: Tanzania, Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Uganda. With its history and traditions, the gastronomic dishes of the country has been known to have a simple yet effective way to feed their people. Also, its location provides them an abundant source of tropical fruits and vegetables as well as different and quality of fishes and kinds of seafood. Ugali is a corned cereal meal that is considered the most common dish in Kenya. Kenyans make this dish by adding the cornmeal into boiling water and wait until it turns into a solid paste. This dish has been known for its consistency and heaviness of the dough. Normally, Kenyans eat ugali with some cooked vegetables and sauce making it a cheap yet nutritious food.

 

Irio

One of the most famous dishes of the country is irio. Its ingredients are made up of the combination of mashed potatoes, corn kernels, and green peas. Kenyans can also eat this heavy and healthy dish along with roasted nyama choma meat.

In a typical setting, chai is one that makes up the breakfast of the Kenyan people. Chai is a tea that consists of milk and flavored sugar that makes it a sweet and tasty drink. Although we know that Kenya can be famous for its coffee production, it is chai that they considered their country’s national drink.

Another Kenyan dish that can be seen during breakfast is the mandazi. Mandazi or African donut is a triangular-shaped fried bread that is best consumed after the deep-frying process. Its ingredients can be easily found and can be made quickly by anyone.

A Kenyan’s gastronomic dishes can’t be complete without its famous nyama choma. Also known as grilled or roasted meat, nyama choma usually takes in the form of goat meat. Beef, chicken, or fish can be also cooked as nyama choma.
